Introduction ✍🏾
The Tanzania Intelligence and Security Service (TISS) played a pivotal role in African geopolitics during the Cold War, balancing between Western and Eastern blocs while combating apartheid South Africa’s espionage machine. Under the visionary leadership of Julius Nyerere, TISS not only shielded Tanzania from foreign subversion but also became a central pillar in supporting liberation movements across Southern Africa. Its intelligence networks, coordination with socialist allies, and dedication to African liberation made it one of the most active and politically influential security services on the continent.
Today, however, the agency faces mounting criticism for being too closely tied to the ruling party, CCM, plagued by corruption allegations, nepotism in recruitment, and leadership instability. The contrast between TISS’s Cold War prominence and its modern-day challenges illustrates a dramatic shift in the agency’s role and reputation.
