🌍 Background

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), now formally recognised as part of the Islamic State Central Africa Province (ISCAP), remain among the most lethal insurgent groups in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a striking testimony reported by Congolese journalist Fiston Mahamba Larousse Wa Biondi, Twaiba, the mother of Ahmad Mahmoud Hassan, alias Abwakasi, described her son’s journey from a promising student to a leading figure within ADF/ISCAP. Her account shows how educational experiences in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa gradually drew him into radicalisation before disappearing into the insurgency, adopting the kunya (nom de guerre) Jundi.
