1) Official Name and Acronym

The agency known historically as the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) was reorganised and rebranded as the General Intelligence Service (GIS) in July 2019, following the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir during the Sudanese Revolution. The renaming narrowed its formal mandate and was presented by the Transitional Military Council as part of a wider security-sector reset.

Current usage: In contemporary reporting and official references, “GIS” is the operative title, though “NISS” persists in journalism and analysis when discussing pre-2019 conduct and institutional legacies.

2) Historical Background (pre-2019; 2019–2023; post-April 2023 war phases)
