OFFICIAL SECRETS (2019)
Director: Gavin Hood Cast: Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Matt Smith, Matthew Goode, Rhys Ifans Runtime: 1 hour 52 minutes Available on: Prime Video, Apple TV (rent/buy), Netflix
It is 2003. Britain is being pulled towards a war with Iraq. Katharine Gun works as a translator at GCHQ, the government’s secret listening agency. One morning, she reads an internal memo revealing that the United States and Britain are trying to spy on United Nations diplomats to pressure them into backing the invasion.
She could have ignored it. Instead, she leaked it.
The film follows what happens next: the newspaper investigation, the government’s response, and the criminal case brought against a young woman who believed that telling the truth mattered more than protecting the system she worked for. She was charged under the Official Secrets Act, which meant she faced criminal prosecution and up to two years in prison for leaking classified information.
Keira Knightley plays Gun as someone who is not built for this kind of fight but refuses to back down. Ralph Fiennes, as her lawyer, is quietly superb. The film does not try to turn this into a spy thriller. It stays with the human cost of one decision and lets you sit with the question it raises: when your government is doing something you believe is wrong, what do you do?
This is a true story. It happened. And the question has not gone away.
