The presidency said the presidential action is to facilitate transition of the apex leadership of our National Intelligence Service, ahead of the retirement of Major-General (Rtd) Philip Wachira Kameru, the outgoing director general.
Maj Gen Kameru was sworn in on September 11, 2014 – less than a month after Michael Gichangi resigned from the NIS Director-General position.
The NIS Director General serves for a five-year term and is eligible for reappointment for one further term.
In 2019 Maj Gen Kameru’s five-year term was about to end when speculation started that a replacement was being lined up.
But President Kenyatta instead renewed his term by another five years, which ends in 2024.
