These are not traditional corporate mercenaries like the Wagner Group, but ideologically-driven Islamist fighters offering professionalised combat services across borders. Fusing Salafi-jihadist ideology with mercenary enterprise, they are turning African insurgencies into battlefields of transnational Islamist warfare.
